Academy Awards Revisited: Who Should Have Really Won (2017)

academy-awards-revisited-2017

I was a big fan of the Oscars while I was younger. I enjoyed the spectacle and felt the excitement of the show. It felt great to have my favorites nominated and having that sweet sting of disappointment if they didn’t win (though there was nothing sweet in Shakespeare In Love winning over Saving Private Ryan). But this year I decided to skip this year’s ceremony altogether. But why? Keep reading ,folks.

For almost a decade I’ve felt disconnected from the award show. And I suspect the reason for this is that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are out of touch on what the ceremony should be about.

The politics behind the scenes are too transparent to ignore. The racial awareness, current political landscape and overall political sensitivity oozes out of the show what should be about honoring the art of cinema in all its glory. Also, anyone else feel that the nomination process in hastily done and lazy at best?

But I digress. I am here to give my opinion on who should’ve won this year. Remember, this is only my  opinion. But my opinion is better than that of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

And here we go.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Winner: Mahersala Ali, MOONLIGHT

Should: John Goodman, 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE

Never knew Goodman could be that scary. And don’t worry, Mahersala Ali is great, but his performance of the year was in Luke Cage.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Winner: Viola Davis, FENCES

Should: Kate McKinnon, GHOSTBUSTERS

What? It was the most memorable supporting performance of the year. And Viola Davis is the lead in Fences, so don’t hate me, hate the Academy.

BEST MAKE UP

Winner: SUICIDE SQUAD

Should: ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS

It’s somehow appropriate that the Academy decided to honor that one Joker design that was universally loathed within seconds of publication.

BEST COSTUME DESIGN

Won: FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM

Should: Yeah, why not. Dan Fogler looked dapper in his beige suit.

BEST SOUND EDITING / BEST SOUND MIXING

Won: ARRIVAL / HACKSAW RIDGE

Should: SULLY / ALLIED

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN

Won: LA LA LAND

SHOULD: ALLIED

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS
Won: THE JUNGLE BOOK

Should: DOCTOR STRANGE

BEST FILM EDITING
Won: HACKSAW RIDGE

Should: 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE

BEST CINEMATOPGRAPHY

Won: LA LA LAND

Should: HARDCORE HENRY

Hardcore Henry’s cinematography is mind-blowing stuff, every glorious second of it.

BEST SCORE:

Won: LA LA LAND

Should: THE NEON DEMON

BEST SONG:
Won: City Of Stars from LA LA LAND

Should: Finest Girl (Bin Laden Song) from POPSTAR: NEVER STOP NEVER STOPPING

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Won: MANCHESTER BY THE SEA
Should: THE NICE GUYS

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

Winner: MOONLIGHT
Should: ARRIVAL

BEST DIRECTOR
Won: Damien Chazelle, LA LA LAND

Should : Nicolas Winding Refn, THE NEON DEMON

BEST ACTOR
Won: Casey Affleck, MANCHESTER BY THE SEA

Should: Ryan fucking Reynolds, DEADPOOL

Casey Affleck playing a mopey Boston dude? That’s a stretch.

BEST ACTRESS

Won: Emma Stone, LA LA LAND

Should: Amy Adams, ARRIVAL

BEST FILM
Won: LA LA LAND

Should: ARRIVAL

So there you go. 2016 was a lousy year for movies. It’s sad when Disney is the one company behind the most entertaining movies of the year. Come on guys, try to keep up.

Miska out.
