Academy Awards Revisited: Who Should Have Won (1997-1999)

Academy Awards Revisited

On the verge of yet another awards season, I decided to revisit past Academy Awards and see if I agree with the list of winners. I will mostly concentrate on the following categorys:

MUSIC

CINEMATOGRAPHY

ACTING (LEAD AND SUPPORTING)

WRITING (ORIGINALS AND ADAPTATIONS)

DIRECTOR and

BEST FILM

And if there’s other notes about that years other categorys, I’ll do a quick run-by at the end. I shall begin the list from 1979, the year I was born and try to reach all the way to the year 2014. That seems appropriate. Shall we begin?

Previous Entries:

1979, 1980, 1981

1982, 1983,1984

Directing:

WON: James Cameron, TITANIC

SHOULD: Well here’s the thing. I heartily agree that Cameron deserved that win (for the very least for Aliens, Terminator 2 and The Abyss), but I also think that Robert Zemeckis did a helluva job with CONTACT. Shit…Cameron wins this round. James Cameron, TITANIC

Best Film:

WON: TITANIC

SHOULD: L.A. CONFIDENTIAL

Other notes: THE FIFTH ELEMENT should have won for art direction and costume design and it’s a bloody shame that they were not even nominated.

Other notes: Lars Von Trier’s THE IDIOTS should have won for the Foreign Language Film. Also, I really do not care for the dual music categories (best dramatic score and best score for a comedy or a musical) so I’ll only give awards for one (thank god they sopped doing this after 1998).
