Academy Awards Revisited: Who Should Have Really Won (1982-1984)

Academy Awards Revisited

On the verge of yet another awards season, I decided to revisit past Academy Awards and see if I agree with the list of winners. I will mostly concentrate on the following categories:

MUSIC

CINEMATOGRAPHY

ACTING (LEAD AND SUPPORTING)

WRITING (ORIGINALS AND ADAPTATIONS)

DIRECTOR and

BEST FILM

And if there’s other notes about that years other categories, I’ll do a quick run-by at the end. I shall begin the list from 1979, the year I was born and try to reach all the way to the year 2014. That seems appropriate. Shall we begin?

1979-1981

1982

Music:

WON: John Williams, E.T.

SHOULD: Don’t get me wrong. I think it’s always, I mean ALWAYS a good thing that John Williams wins an Academy Award. But still, I have to say that Vangelis’ BLADE RUNNER should’ve won.

Cinematography:

WON: Billy Williams, Ronnie Taylor, GANDHI

SHOULD: Jordan Cronenweth, BLADE RUNNER (And he wasn’t even nominated!)

Best Supporting Actress:

WON: Jessica Lange, TOOTSIE

SHOULD: First of all, Jessica Lange was a leading lady in Tootsie, not a supporting actress. Teri Garr was in a supporting role in that film, who also got a nomination, by the way. Weird play from the Academy. But I’d say Dee Wallace for E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL. I like her a lot in that.

Best Supporting Actor:

WON: Louis Gossett, Jr., AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN

SHOULD: Sean Penn, FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH

Best Actor:

WON: Ben Kingsley, GANDHI

SHOULD: Yep.

Best Actress:

WON: Meryl Streep, SOPHIE’S CHOICE

SHOULD: Dustin Hoffman, TOOTSIE (See what I did there?)

Original Screenplay:

WON: John Briley, GANDHI

SHOULD: Carl Reiner, George Gipe & Steve Martin, DEAD MEN DON’T WEAR PLAID

Adapted Screenplay:

WON: Costa-Gavras, Donald Stewart, MISSING

SHOULD: Wolfgang Petersen, DAS BOOT

Directing:

WON: Richard Attenborough, GANDHI

SHOULD: John Carpenter, THE THING

Best Film:

WON: GANDHI

SHOULD: E.T. THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL

Other Notes: Blade Runner was snubbed of all the technical achievement awards, which it deserved. Nice going, the Academy.

1983

Music:

WON: Bill Conti, THE RIGHT STUFF

SHOULD: Jerry Goldsmith, UNDER FIRE

Cinematography:

WON: Sven Nykvist, FANNY & ALEXANDER

SHOULD: Don Peterman, FLASHDANCE

Best Supporting Actress:

WON: Linda Hunt, THE YEAR OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY

SHOULD: Yes. Hell yes.

Best Supporting Actor:

WON: Jack Nicholson, TERMS OF ENDEARMENT

SHOULD: Sure, why not.

Best Actor:

WON: Robert Duvall, TENDER MERCIES

SHOULD: Al Pacino, SCARFACE

Best Actress:

WON: Shirley MacLaine, TERMS OF ENDEARMENT

SHOULD: Julie Walters, EDUCATING RITA

Original Screenplay:

WON: Horton Foote, TENDER MERCIES

SHOULD: Paul D. Zimmerman, THE KING OF COMEDY

Adapted Screenplay:

WON: James L. Brooks, TERMS OF ENDEARMENT

SHOULD: Brooks deserved it.

Directing:

WON: James L. Brooks, TERMS OF ENDEARMENT

SHOULD: Philip Kaufman, THE RIGHT STUFF

Best Film:

WON: TERMS OF ENDEARMENT

SHOULD: SCARFACE

1984

Music:

WON: Maurice Jarre, A PASSAGE TO INDIA

SHOULD: Bill Conti, POLICE ACADEMY

Cinematography:

WON: Chris Menges, THE KILLING FIELDS

SHOULD: Miroslav Ondricek, AMADEUS

Best Supporting Actress:

WON: Peggy Ashcroft, A PASSAGE TO INDIA

SHOULD: Yes.

Best Supporting Actor:

WON: Haing S. Nogor, THE KILLING FIELDS

SHOULD: Haing Nogor was really the lead in The Killing Fields, so I’d say Noriyuki ‘Pat’ Morita for THE KARATE KID

Best Actor:

WON: F. Murray Abraham, AMADEUS

SHOULD: Tom Hulce, AMADEUS. Jesus, Academy. Are you even trying anymore?

Best Actress:

WON: Sally Field, PLACES IN THE HEART

SHOULD: Kathleen Turner, ROMANCING THE STONE

Original Screenplay:

WON: Robert Benton, PLACES IN THE HEART

SHOULD: Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer & Rob Reiner, THIS IS SPINAL TAP

Adapted Screenplay:

WON: Peter Schaffer, AMADEUS

SHOULD: Amadeus deserved it.

Directing:

WON: Milos Forman, AMADEUS

SHOULD: Milos Forman, AMADEUS

Best Film:

WON: AMADEUS

SHOULD: AMADEUS. Huh. Look at that. I agreed.

Next: 1985-1987
