To commemorate the 20 years since the X-Files saw the light of day I decided to rewatch all the episodes and share my opinions and thoughts the episodes provoke.
Season 1, Episode 5: “Shadows”
Director: Michael Katleman
Writers: Glen Morgan, James Wan
Poltergeists! 2 dead terrorists are found in Philadelphia and an unknown government official asks consultation from our beloved X-filers. Mulder and Scully use their detective skills quite admirably and follow a lead to a woman named Lauren Kyte (excellent performance by Lisa Waltz) who was the last person to have seen the terrorists alive. Soon we find out that Lauren’s recently deceased boss stands as a supernatural bodyguard to her. Lauren found his boss Howard’s body in a bathtub with his wrists sliced open thinking he committed a suicide. Howard’s ghost disagrees and tries to help Lauren to find out the truth. Then Mulder and Scully are thrown into the mix.
I was generally pleased with this episode. I was surprised when I found out that the poltergeist in this episode was not malevolent. They play this scenario like the movie ‘Ghost’ without actually seeing Patrick Swayze’s character. The episode was pretty decently paced and the acting is great, especially Lisa Waltz as Lauren. Mark Snow’s music is really good here and the practical ghost effects are believable. Yep, it was a good episode.
Best scene: Poltergeist killing Lauren’s assassins. Fucking great.
Most memorable bit: The bleeding bathwater.
Mulder: Do you believe in the afterlife, Scully?
Scully: I’d settle for a life in this one.
